We should know that outward manners are indicative of inward ones, in the sense that man’s practical deeds are guided by spiritual contemplation and his knowledge. Inward secrets implant deeds and adorn it. We will now highlight some manners of the Prophet, peace be upon him, in order to strengthen our faith by observing his noble manners.
Aisha was once asked about his character. She said, “His character was the Quran.”
The Almighty praised his character, saying:
The Prophet, peace be upon him, was clement even with his enemies. Aisha reported: A group of Jews asked permission to visit the Prophet. When they entered, they said, “As-Samu ‘Alayka (Death be upon you).” I said, “The curse of Allah be upon you!” The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍIndeed, you are of a great moral character.
[Surah Al-Qalam 68:4]
إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الْأَمْرِ كُلِّهِO Aisha, Allah is kind and He loves kindness in all matters.
She said, “Have you not heard what they said?” He said:
The Prophet, peace be upon him, was also very generous and kind to all. He used to mend his shoes, patch his clothes, and help his household. He was more shy than a virgin on her wedding night. He accepted the invitation of sloves, visited the sick, walked alone, accepted gifts, ate from them and rewarded from them. He never accepted charity for himself nor would he approach it. He never ate bread for three consecutive days. He tied up a stone on his stomach because of hunger. He never marred any food. He never ate while leaning on the ground. He used to eat from his front. He also ate pumpkin, vinegar, and pressed dates. He sometimes rode a camel, mule or a donkey. He even walked on his bare feet. He loved perfumes and detested ugly winds. He received the graceful generously. He never treated anyone harshly. His laugh was a gentle smile only. He was engaged all the time in righteous deeds. He never reviled a woman or a servant. He never hurt anyone except while fighting in the cause of Allah. Whenever he was made to choose between two things, he would choose the easier one unless it was a sin.وَعَلَيْكُمْI said, wa alaykum (and upon you).
[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 84, Number 61]
Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, reports:
In the Torah, the Prophet, peace be upon him, was described as the “chosen Prophet of Allah. He is neither stiff nor harsh. He does not raise his voice in the markets. He does not retaliate for mischief, but rather pardons and forgives.” He used to greet people first. He never parted people first, even when shaking hands. He used to seat himself wherever he finds a room. He preferred silence for long periods. When he spoke, he used to repeat his words three times. He never embarrassed anyone.خَدَمْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَشْرَ سِنِينَ وَاللَّهِ مَا قَالَ لِي أُفًّا قَطُّ وَلاَ قَالَ لِي لِشَىْءٍ لِمَ فَعَلْتَ كَذَا وَهَلاَّ فَعَلْتَ كَذَاI served the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, for ten years. By Allah, he never even said to me “Uff!” and he never said (harshly) for anything, “Why did you do that?” or “Why did you not do that?”
[Sahih Muslim, Book 30, Number 5720]
The Prophet, peace be upon him, was quite loyal and trustworthy. Seeing him, people naturally revered him. Dealing with him, they loved him very much. Al-Bara’ reported:
As for his description, Anas reported:كُنَّا وَاللَّهِ إِذَا احْمَرَّ الْبَأْسُ نَتَّقِي بِهِ وَإِنَّ الشُّجَاعَ مِنَّا لَلَّذِي يُحَاذِي بِهِ يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلمBy Allah, when the fighting became fierce, we would seek protection by his side, and the bravest among us was the one who confronted the onslaught and it was the Prophet, peace be upon him.
[Sahih Muslim, Book 19, Number 4389]
The Prophet, peace be upon him, had broad shoulders and hair reaching to his ears. He had deep, large and black eyes with long lashes, a dense beard, smooth cheeks and silky hands. His face was like the moon. Abu Ishaq reported: A man asked Al-Bara, “Was the face of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, like a sword?” He said:كَانَ رَبْعَةً مِنَ الْقَوْمِ، لَيْسَ بِالطَّوِيلِ وَلاَ بِالْقَصِيرِ، أَزْهَرَ اللَّوْنِ لَيْسَ بِأَبْيَضَ أَمْهَقَ وَلاَ آدَمَ، لَيْسَ بِجَعْدٍ قَطَطٍ وَلاَ سَبْطٍ رَجِلٍHe was of medium height amongst the people, neither tall nor short; he had a rosy color, neither absolutely white nor deep brown; his hair was neither completely curly nor quite lank.
[Sahih Bukhari, Book 56, Hadith 747]
Concerning the Miracles of the Prophetلَا مِثْلَ الْقَمَرِNo, it was like the moon.
[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Book 46, Number 3636, Sahih]
Considering his life and manners in dealing with people and managing their different affairs as well as elaborating Sharia rulings, one becomes completely convinced that all these were purely divine. He was divinely guided and supported. Thus, his life proves his veracity beyond any doubt.
Practically speaking, the Quran presents the greatest and everlasting miracles granted to the Prophet, peace be upon him, from the Almighty. All people through the ages have failed to produce a single verse like it. All previous prophets, peace be upon them, had miracles which ended with the end of their lives. But the Quran remains forever.
Furthermore, the moon was split for him, water gushed out between his fingers and innumerable people became full with only a little of his food. The stem of a palm-tree moaned out of longing for him, along with many other such miracles.
باب آداب المعيشة وأخلاق النبوة
اعلم: أن آداب الظواهر عنوان آداب البواطن، وحركات
الجوارح ثمرات الخواطر، والأعمال نتائج الأخلاق، والآداب رشح المعارف،
وسرائر القلوب هى مغارس الأفعال ومنابعها، وأنوار السرائر هى التى تشرق على
الظواهر فتزينها وتحليها. ومن لم يخشع قلبه لم تخشع جوارحه، ومن لم يكن
صدره مشكاة الأنوار الإلهية، لم يفض على ظاهره جمال الآداب النبوية.
وقد أسلفنا جملة من الآداب بما يغنى عن إعادتها هاهنا،
لكن نقتصر فى هذا الباب على شىء من آداب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم
وأخلاقه لنجمع مع جمع الآداب تأكيد الإيمان بمشاهدة أخلاقه الكريمة التى
يشهد آحادها بأنه أكرم الخلق وأعلاهم مرتبة وأجلهم قدراً، فكيف
بمجموعها؟.
سئلت عائشة رضى الله عنه الله ، عنها عن خلق رسول الله
صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم فقالت: كان خلقه القرآن، يغضب لغضبه ويرضى
لرضاه، ولما كمل الله تعالى خلقه أثنى عليه فقال: {وإنك لعلى خلق
عظيم} [القلم: 5] فسبحان من أعطى ثم أثنى. وهذه جملة من محاسن
أخلاقه صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ، وصفته:
كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم أحلم الناس، واسخي
الناس، وأعطف الناس. وكان يخصف النعل، ويرقع الثوب، ويخدم فى مهنة
أهله. وكان أشد حياء من العذراء فى خدرها.
وكان يجيب دعوة المملوك، ويعود المرضى، ويمشى وحده، ويردف
خلفه، ويقبل الهدية، ويأكلها، ويكافئ عليها، ولا يأكل الصدقة، ولا يجد من
الدقل (1) ما يملأ بطنه، ولم يشبع من خبز بر ثلاثة أيام تباعاً.وكان
يعصب على بطنه الحجر من الجوع. وكان يأكل ما حضر، وما عاب طعاماً
قط.وكان لا يأكل متكئاً، ويأكل مما يليه. وكان أحب الطعام إليه اللحم،
ومن الشاة الكتف، ومن البقول الدباء، ومن الصبغ الخل، ومن التمر
العجوة.وكان يلبس ما وجد ، مرة برد حبرة، ومرة جبة صوف.ويركب تارة
بعيراً وتارة بغلة، وتارة حماراً، ويمشى مرة راجلاً حافياً.
وكان يحب الطيب، ويكره الريح الخبيثة.ويكرم أهل الفضل، ويتألف أهل الشرف.
ولا يجفو على أحد، ويقبل معذرة المعتذر إليه.يمزح ولا
يقول إلا حقاً، يضحك فى غير قهقهة، لا يمضى عليه وقت فى غير عمل لله تعالى،
أو فيما لابد منه من صلاح نفسه.وما لعن امرأة ولا خادماً قط.وما ضرب
أحداً بيده قط، إلا أن يجاهد فى سبيل الله.وما انتقم لنفسه إلا أن تنتهك
حرمات الله.وما خير بين شيئين إلا اختار أيسرهما، إلا أن يكون مأثماً أو
قطيعة رحم، فيكون أبعد الناس منه.وقال أنس رضى الله عنه: خدمته عشر
سنين، فما قال لى: أف قط، ولا قال لشىء فعلته: لم فعلته، ولا لشىء لم
أفعله: لا فعلت كذا؟ومن صفته فى التوراة: محمد رسول الله، عبدى
المختار، ليس بفظ، ولا غليظ، ولا صخاب فى الأسواق، ولا يجزى بالسيئة
السيئة، ولكن يعفو ويصفح.وكان من خلقه أنه يبدأ بالسلام من لقيه، ومن
فاره بحاجة صابره حتى يكون هو المنصرف.وما أخذ أحد يده فأرسل يده حتى
يرسلها الآخذ.وكان يجلس حيث ينتهى به المجلس مختلطاً بأصحابه كأنه أحدهم،
فيأتى الغريب فلا يدرى أيهم هو حتى يسأل عنه:
وكان طويل السكوت، فإذا تلكم لم يسرد كلامه، بل يتثبت فيه
ويكرره ليفهم. وكان يعفو مع القدرة، ولا يواجه أحداً بما يكره.وكان
أصدق الناس لهجة، وأوفاهم ذمة، وألينهم عريكة، وأكرمهم عشرة، ومن رآه بديهة
هابة، ومن خالطه معرفة أحبه، وكان أصحابه إذا تكلموا فى أمر الدنيا تحدث
معهم، وكانوا يتذاكرون أمر الجاهلية فيضحكون ويبتسم.وكان أشجع الناس.
قال بعض أصحابه: البأس اتقينا برسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم، ولم
يكن بالطويل البائن ولا بالقصير، كان ربعه من القوم.وكان أزهر الله ولم
يكن بالآدم.وكان رجل الشعر، ليس بالبسط ولا الجعد القطط، وكان شعره إلى
شحمة أذنه.وكان واسع الجبهة، أزج الحواجب، أدعج العينين، أهدب الأشفار،
أقنى العرنين، سهل الخدين، كث اللحية، كأن عنقه جيد دمية، عريض الصدر، سواء
البطن والصدر، رحب الراحة، طويل الزندين، كفه ألين من الحرير صلى الله
عليه وآله وسلم.
وأما معجزاته صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم
فإن من شاهد أحواله وسمع أخباره المشتملة على أخلاقه
وأفعاله وآدابه وبدائع تدبيره لمصالح الخلق ومحاسن إشارته فى تفصيل ظاهر
الشرع الذى تعجز العقلاء والفصحاء عن إدراك أوائل دقائقها فى طول أعمارهم،
لم يبق عنده ريب فى أن ذلك لم يكن محتسباً بحيلة وأنه لا يتصور ذلك إلا
بالاستمداد من تأييد سماوى وقوة إلهية، وأن ذلك لا يصح لملبس ولا كذاب، بل
كانت شمائله وأحواله شواهد قاطعة بصدقة.ومن أعظم معجزاته انشقاق القمر،
ونبع الماء من بين أصابعه، وإطعامه الخلق الكثير من الطعام اليسير، ورميه
بحصيات يسيرة فوصلت إلى أعين الخلق الكثير، وحنين الجذع إليه كما يحن
العشار، وإخباره بالغائبات فكانت كما قال، ورد عين قتادة بيده فكانت أحسن
عينيه، وتفل فى عين على رضى الله عنه وهو أرمد فصح من وقته، إلى غير ذلك من
المعجزات التى شاعت ولم يوجد سبيل إلى كتمانها، نسأل الله أن يوفقنا
للاقتداء بأخلاقه وصفاته، إنه كريم مجيب، والحمد لله رب العالمين.
