Ibn Taymiyyah: Righteousness is to fulfill the Rights of Allah and the Rights of His servants

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله writes in his Kitab Al-Iman [English translation and Arabic text below]:
The following words – “righteous,” “witness,” and “truthful,” – may be cited separately to refer to the Prophets. Allah the Exalted says about Al-Khalil (the Prophet Abraham):

وَآتَيْنَاهُ أَجْرَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَإِنَّهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ لَمِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ

We gave him his reward in the world and, indeed, in the Hereafter he will be one of the righteous.
[Surah Al-Ankabut 29:27]

And:

وَآتَيْنَاهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَإِنَّهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ لَمِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ

We gave him good in this world and, indeed, in the Hereafter he will be one of the righteous.
[Sura An-Nahl 16:122]

Al-Khalil عليه سلم said:

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي حُكْمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ

My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous.
[Surah Ash-Shu’ara 26:83]

Joseph عليه سلم said:

تَوَفَّنِي مُسْلِمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ

Let me die as a Muslim and join me with the righteous.
[Surah Yusuf 12:101]

Solomon عليه سلم said:

أَدْخِلْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ فِي عِبَادِكَ الصَّالِحِينَ

Enter me, by Your mercy, among Your righteous servants.
[Surah  An-Naml 27:19]

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said in the Hadith, whose authenticity is agreed upon, when people were saying (incorrectly) after the prayer, “Peace be upon Allah before His servants, peace be upon the Angel Gabriel, peace be upon the Angel Michael, and peace be upon so-and-so…” So the Messenger of Allah said to them one day:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ فَإِذَا قَعَدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَقُلْ التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَإِذَا قَالَهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ لِلَّهِ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ

Indeed, Allah Himself is Peace. When any one of you sits during prayers, he should say, “Greetings, prayers, and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah,” for when he says this it reaches every righteous servant in the heavens and on earth.
[Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Number 793]

The word “righteous” may be associated with other terms. Allah says:

وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ

Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger, indeed, those will be with the ones Allah has blessed: the Prophets, the truthful, the witnesses, and the righteous.
[Surah An-Nisa 4:69]

Al-Zajjaj and others said:

الصالح  القائم بحقوق الله وحقوق عباده

The righteous person is one who fulfills the rights of Allah and His servants.

In fact, the word “righteous” means the opposite of the word “corrupt.” Accordingly, when the word “righteous” is used in an absolute sense it means one who works and stays righteous without being corrupted. That is, he is one whose inward works and sayings correspond exactly to his outward obedience to Allah. On this basis, righteous refers to the Prophets and those who are below them. In the verse mentioned above, the words “righteous” were used in conjunction with the phrase “Prophets” who in turn are described in different verses of the Quran as being truthful. Allah says:

وَاذْكُرْ فِي الْكِتَابِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ صِدِّيقًا نَّبِيًّا

Mention in the Book, Abraham, verily he was truthful, a Prophet.
[Surah Maryam 19:41]

And:

وَاذْكُرْ فِي الْكِتَابِ إِدْرِيسَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ صِدِّيقًا نَّبِيًّا

Mention in the Book, Idris, verily he was truthful, a Prophet.
[Surah Maryam 19:56]

وكذلك لفظ ” الصالح ” و ” الشهيد ” و ” الصديق ”  يذكر مفردا ; فيتناول النبيين قال تعالى في حق الخليل   وآتيناه أجره في الدنيا وإنه في الآخرة لمن الصالحين   وقال   وآتيناه في الدنيا حسنة وإنه في الآخرة لمن الصالحين   وقال الخليل   رب هب لي حكما وألحقني بالصالحين   وقال يوسف   توفني مسلما وألحقني بالصالحين   وقال سليمان   وأدخلني برحمتك في عبادك الصالحين   وقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في الحديث الصحيح المتفق على صحته  لما كانوا يقولون في آخر صلاتهم  السلام على الله قبل عباده السلام على فلان فقال لنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ذات يوم إن الله هو السلام فإذا قعد أحدكم في الصلاة ; فليقل  التحيات لله والصلوات والطيبات السلام عليك أيها النبي ورحمة الله وبركاته السلام علينا وعلى عباد الله الصالحين فإذا قالها أصابت كل عبد صالح لله في السماء والأرض    الحديث  وقد يذكر ” الصالح مع غيره ” كقوله تعالى   فأولئك مع الذين أنعم الله عليهم من النبيين والصديقين والشهداء والصالحين   قال الزجاج وغيره  الصالح  القائم بحقوق الله وحقوق عباده  ولفظ ” الصالح ” خلاف الفاسد ; فإذا أطلق فهو الذي أصلح جميع أمره فلم يكن فيه شيء من الفساد فاستوت سريرته وعلانيته وأقواله وأعماله على ما يرضي ربه ; وهذا يتناول النبيين ومن دونهم  ولفظ ” الصديق ” قد جعل هنا معطوفا على النبيين ; وقد وصف به النبيين في مثل قوله   واذكر في الكتاب إبراهيم إنه كان صديقا نبيا  -  واذكر في الكتاب إدريس إنه كان صديقا نبيا
