Ibn Taymiyyah: Enjoining good and forbidding evil requires knowledge, mercy, and wisdom

Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728AH/1328CE) said, “Three qualities are essential for enjoining good: knowledge, gentleness, and patience. Knowledge is required before enjoining and forbidding, gentleness is required during it, and patience is required after it. This separation does not negate the fact that these three qualities should be present at all times. This is similar to a statement narrated from the righteous predecessors, some of whom attributed it to the Prophet. Abu Ya’la mentioned this in his book entitled Al-Ma’tamad as follows: No one should enjoin good or forbid evil unless he understands what he enjoins, understands what he forbids, show gentleness in what he enjoins, shows gentleness in what he forbids, show forbearance in what he enjoins, and show forbearance in what he forbids.”

[Ibn Taymiyyah, Amr bil-Ma’ruf wa Nahi ‘an al-Munkar]

Hadith on Rights: The roads have rights, so fulfill their rights

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Beware of sitting in the roads.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, we have nowhere else to sit and talk.” So he said, “If you insist, then give the road its right.” They said, “And what is its right, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Lower the gaze, avoid harming others, return greetings of peace, enjoining the good, and forbidding the evil.”

[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 40, Number 4815]

Hadith on Enjoining Good: Whoever sees vice should change it with his hand, tongue, or heart

Tariq ibn Shihab said: The first to begin the sermon on the Day of Eid before prayer was Marwan. A man stood and said, “Prayer comes before the sermon.” Marwan said, “This has been done away.” Abu Sa’id remarked: This man has done his duty. I heard the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم say, Whoever sees vice, let him change it with his hand; and if he is unable, then with his tongue; and if he is unable, then with his heart, and that is the weakest (level of) faith.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 79]

Book of Faith, Chapter: Explanation that forbidding vice is part of Faith, and that Faith increases and decreases.

Hadith on Charity: Every good deed is charity, even smiling at your brother
