An-Nawawi: The Condemnation of Arrogance, Pride, and Self-Conceit

By Imam An-Nawawi in Riyad us Saliheen
Allah Almighty said:

Umar ibn Al-Khattab: When you did you enslave people although they are born free?

Ibn Abd Al-Hakim reported: Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said that a man from the people of Egypt came to Umar ibn Al-Khattab and said, “O leader of the believers, I seek refuge in you from injustice!” Umar replied, “You have sought someone willing.” The man said, “I competed with the son of Amr ibn Al-‘As and I won, but he started striking me with a whip and saying: I am the son of the dignified!” Upon this, Umar wrote to Amr ordering him to travel to him with his son. He came with his son and Umar said, “Where is the Egyptian?” He gave him the whip and told him to strike the son of Amr. The man started striking him while Umar was saying, “Strike the son of the illiterates!” Anas said, “By Allah, the man struck him and we loved his striking, and he did not stop until we wished he stopped.” Then Umar said to the Egyptian, “Direct it to Amr.” The Egyptian said, “O leader of the believers, it was only his son who struck me and I have settled the score.” Umar said to Amr, “Since when did you enslave the people though they were born from their mothers in freedom?” Amr said, “O leader of the believers, I did not know about this and he did not tell me.”

[Ibn Abd Al-Hakim, Futuh Masr 290]

Ibn Taymiyyah: The believers reconcile people, give charity, and behave with good character

Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728AH/1328CE) wrote in his text book on Islamic Creed, “The believers encourage people to reconcile relations with those who have cut them off, to give charity to those who have deprived them, and to forgive those who have oppressed them. They order people to keep benevolence with parents, to uphold ties of family, to be benevolent with neighbors, to be kind with orphans, travelers and the poor, and to be gentle with servants. They forbid bragging, arrogance and transgression. They discourage people from feeling superior over others, rightly or wrongly. And they bid people use lofty manners and prohibit them from pursuing trifles. All that they say or do from the above (good character) or from other teachings, in all of it they follow the Book and the Sunnah. Their path is the religion of Islam, for which Allah sent Muhammad, peace be blessings be upon him.”

[Ibn Taymiyyah, Al-Aqidah Al-Wasitiyyah]

Hadith on Forgiveness: The story of the humble sinner in Paradise and the arrogant worshipper in Hellfire

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: Two men among the Children of Israel were opposite of each other. One of them was a sinner and the other would strive in worship. The one who strove would see the one sinning and would tell him to stop. One day he found him sinning so he said, “Stop!” The sinner said, “Leave me alone, by my Lord. Have you been sent as a watchman over me?” The worshipper said, “By Allah, Allah will not forgive you or enter you into Paradise.” Later their souls were taken (after death) and they met in the presence of the Lord of the Worlds. Allah said to the one who strove, “Did you have knowledge of Me? Or did you have power over what is in My Hand?” He said to the sinner, “Enter Paradise by My Mercy.” And He said to the worshipper, “Take him to the Hellfire.” Abu Huraira said, “By the one in whose Hand is my life, he spoke a word which ruined him in this world and the Hereafter.”
