Ibn Kathir on Ayyub: The story of the Prophet Ayyub’s vow to strike his wife

Ibn Kathir said: Allah said, “Take in your hand a bundle of grass and strike with it and do not break your oath.” (38:44) The Prophet Job, upon him be peace, was angry with his wife and upset about something she had done, so he swore an oath that if Allah healed him, he would strike her with one hundred blows. When Allah healed him, how could her service of mercy, compassion, and kindness be rewarded with a beating? So Allah showed him a way out, which was to take a bundle of thin grass with one hundred stems and strike her with it once. Thus he fulfilled his oath and avoided breaking his vow. This was the solution and way out for one who had fear of Allah and who turned to Him in repentance.

Hadith on Asceticism: Love good for people, be content with Islam, be a good neighbor, and laugh less

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “O Abu Huraira, be cautious and you will be the most devoted of the people. Be content and you will be the most grateful of the people. Love for the people what you love for yourself and you will be a believer. Behave well with your neighbors and you will be a Muslim; and laugh less, for verily, too much laughter will deaden the heart.”

Khutbah Al-Hājah: How to Begin a Khutbah Sermon in Arabic and English

All thanks and praise is due to Allah, whom we seek His help and forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from whatever evil our hearts conceal and from the consequences of our evil deeds. Whoever Allah grants guidance will never be led astray. Whoever He leads astray will never find guidance. I attest that none is worthy of worship except Allah, who has no partners, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

[Surah Ali Imran 3:102]

O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah , through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.

[Surah An-Nisa 4:1]

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.

[Surah Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]

Indeed, the most truthful speech is the Book of Allah, the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, and the worst affairs are newly invented matters. Every newly invented matter is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Hellfire.

To proceed:

Hadith on Supplication: Whoever recited these words and died in the night will have died upon Al-Fitrah (monotheistic instinct)

Al-Bara ibn Azib reported (رضى الله عنه): The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “When you go to bed, perform Wudu’ (ablution) as for prayer, then lie down on your right side and say, ‘O Allah, I submit my face to You, and entrust my affair to You, and commit my back to You, out of hope and fear of You. There is no refuge or place of safety but with You. I believe in the Book that You have revealed, and the Prophet you have sent.’ He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said further: Whoever recited these words and died in the night will have died upon Al-Fitrah (monotheistic instinct).”

Hadith on Quran: The reason the Bismillah is missing from Surah At-Tawba is because Uthman thought it could be part of Surah Al-Anfal

Ibn Abbas said: I said to Uthman ibn Affan, “What is your reasoning with Surah Al-Anfal, which has less than a hundred verses, and Surah Bara’ah (At-Tawba), which has more than a hundred verses, yet you put them together without writing in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful between them and you placed them with the seven long Surahs. Why did you do that?” Uthman said, “A long time might pass with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, without anything being revealed to him, and then sometimes a Surah with numerous verses might be revealed. So when something was revealed he would call for someone who could write and tell them to put these verses in the Surah which mentions this and that. When a verse was revealed, he would tell them to put this verse in the Surah which mentions this and that. Al-Anfal was among the first to be revealed in Medina, and Bara’ah was among the last of those revealed of the Quran and their discussions resemble each other, so we thought that they were part of each other. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, died and it was not clear to us if they were part of each other. For this reason, we put them together without writing in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful and we included them with the seven long Surahs.”

Hadith on Islam: The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is prayer, its peak is Jihad, and all this is achieved by guarding the tongue from sin

Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: I was with the Prophet, peace be upon him, and we woke up one day and I said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me about a deed that will enter me into Paradise and keep me away from the Fire.” He said, “You have asked about an enormous matter, yet it is easy for whom Allah makes it easy. Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him; establish the prayer; give the charity; fast the month of Ramadan; and perform pilgrimage to the House.” Then he said, “Shall I not tell you about the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield; charity extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire; and the prayer of a man in the late night.” Then he recited, “They arise from their beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend from what We have provided them, and no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do (32:16-17).” Then he said, “Shall I not tell you about the head of the matter and its peak?” I said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “The head of the matter is Islam; its pillar is the prayer; and Jihad is its peak.” Then he said, “Shall I not tell you how to achieve all of this?” I said, “Of course, O Prophet of Allah.” He took hold of his tongue and said, “Restrain this.” I said, “O Prophet of Allah, will we be held accountable for what we say?” He said, “May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu’adh! Is there anything that topples people onto their faces in the Hellfire except the harvest of their tongues?
