Hadith on Medina: The Virtue of the Prophet’s City, Al-Madinah

Narrated Anas: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “Medina is a sanctuary from this place to that. Its trees should not be cut and no heresy should be innovated nor any sin should be committed in it, and whoever innovates in it a heresy or commits sins, then he will incur the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people.”

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 30, Number 91]

Hadith on Graves: Do not take the Prophet’s Grave as a place of festivity or abandon prayer in your homes

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Do not make your homes into graves (in which prayer is forbidden); and do not make my grave into a place of celebration; and send blessings upon me, for indeed your blessings will reach me wherever you are.”

[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Rites, Number 2044, Hasan]

Hadith on Mosques: Whoever builds a house for Allah, then Allah will build for him a house in Paradise

Mahmud ibn Labid reported: Uthman ibn Affan decided to rebuild the mosque (in Medina) but the people did not like this idea and they wished that it would be preserved in the same form. Therefore, Uthman said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say, “He who builds a mosque for Allah, then Allah will build for him (a house) like it in Paradise.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 42, Number 7110]

Hadith on Quran: The reason the Bismillah is missing from Surah At-Tawba is because Uthman thought it could be part of Surah Al-Anfal

Ibn Abbas said: I said to Uthman ibn Affan, “What is your reasoning with Surah Al-Anfal, which has less than a hundred verses, and Surah Bara’ah (At-Tawba), which has more than a hundred verses, yet you put them together without writing in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful between them and you placed them with the seven long Surahs. Why did you do that?” Uthman said, “A long time might pass with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, without anything being revealed to him, and then sometimes a Surah with numerous verses might be revealed. So when something was revealed he would call for someone who could write and tell them to put these verses in the Surah which mentions this and that. When a verse was revealed, he would tell them to put this verse in the Surah which mentions this and that. Al-Anfal was among the first to be revealed in Medina, and Bara’ah was among the last of those revealed of the Quran and their discussions resemble each other, so we thought that they were part of each other. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, died and it was not clear to us if they were part of each other. For this reason, we put them together without writing in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful and we included them with the seven long Surahs.”

[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Book of Tafsir, Number 3086, Sahih]

Hadith on Prayer: How the call to prayer was legislated in Islam

Ibn Umar reported: When the Muslims arrived in Medina, they gathered together for the time of prayer but no one called them. One day, some of them said, “Let us use a bell like the Christians.” Others said, “Let us use a horn like the Jews.” Umar said, “Why not appoint a man to call for the prayer?” The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “O Bilal, stand and call for prayer.”

[Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Number 735]

Hadith on Pilgrimage: Do not perform a religious journey except to the Sacred Masajid in Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem

Abu Huraira reported: I heard from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he said, “Do not undertake a (religious) journey except to three mosques: this mosque of mine (in Medina), the Sacred Mosque (in Mecca), and the Farthest Mosque (in Jerusalem).
