Hadith on Omens: Whoever changes his mind due to an omen has committed an act of idolatry

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever turns back from something due to seeing an omen, then he has committed idolatry.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the expiation for that?” The Prophet said, “That he says: O Allah, there is no good but your good, no omen but your omen, and there is no God besides you.”

Hadith on Faith: The sweetness of faith is to love Allah, His Messenger, and the people

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “None will taste the sweetness of faith until he loves a person only for the sake of Allah, until he would rather be thrown in the fire than to return to unbelief, and until Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else.”

Hadith on Abraham: The story of Zaid ibn Amr’s search for the true religion of Abraham

Ibn Umar reported: Zaid ibn Amr ibn Nufail went to Syria to ask about a ture religion to follow. He met a Jewish scholar and he asked them about their religion. Zaid said, “I intend to embrace your religion, so tell me something about it.” The Jew said, “You cannot embrace our religion until you receive a share of Allah’s anger.” Zaid said, “I do not run except from Allah’s anger and I will never bear it if I can avoid it; can you tell me about another religion?” He said, “I do not know of any other religion but the Haneef.” Zaid said, “What is the Haneef?” He said, “Haneef is the religion of Abraham who was neither a Jew nor a Christian.” Then Zaid left and he met a Christian scholar and he told him the same as before. The Christian said, “You cannot embrace our religion until you receive a share of Allah’s curse.” Zaid said, “I do not run except from Allah’s curse and I will never bear it if I can avoid it; can you tell me about another religion?” He said, “I do not know of any other religion but the Haneef.” Zaid said, “What is the Haneef?” He said, “Haneef is the religion of Abraham, who was neither a Jew nor a Christian, and he would worship none but Allah.” When Zaid heard this about Abraham, he left that place and he raised both of his hands and he said, “O Allah, you are my witness that I am upon the religion of Abraham.”

Hadith on Warning: The Prophet was sent to warn people about Hellfire, just as a man warns his people about an enemy army

Abu Musa reported: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “Verily, the parable of what Allah has sent to me is that of a man who came to us and said: O people, I have seen an army with my eyes and I am a clear warner to you that you should immediately find a means of escape. A group of people among them paid attention and fled to a place of safety; and a group among them belied him and when the morning came, the army attacked them and they were routed. That is the parable of the one who obeys me and follows that with which I have been sent, and the parable of the other is the one who has disobeyed me and belied the truth with which I have been sent.

Ibn Taymiyyah: Jihad against the soul is the foundation for all other types of Jihad

Ibn Al-Qayyim reported: Our Sheikh, Ibn Taymiyyah, said, “Jihad against the soul and desires is the foundation of Jihad against the disbelievers and hypocrites. Indeed, it is not possible to strive against them until one strives against himself and his desires; then he can go out against them.”

[Ibn Al-Qayyim, Rawdah Al-Muhibbeen]

Hadith on Pardon: The Messenger of Allah forgives the polytheist who tried to murder him

Jabir reported: We took part in the expedition with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, against Najd and when the time for afternoon rest approached, he was in a valley of thorny trees. He dismounted under a tree to rest in its shade and hung his sword upon it. The people dispersed among the trees in order to use their shade. While we were like this, the Messenger of Allah called us and we came to find a Bedouin sitting in front of him. The Messenger of Allah said, “This person came to me while I was asleep and he quietly took my sword. I woke up while he was standing over my head, holding my unsheathed sword. He said: Who will protect you from me? I said: Allah, three times.” And the Messenger of Allah did not punish him.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 59, Number 460]

In another narration, the polytheist said, “Who will protect you from me?” The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Allah the Exalted.” Then the sword fell from his hand and the Messenger of Allah seized it. He said, “Who will protect you from me?” The polytheist said, “Be good to me!” He said, “Will you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I am the Messenger of Allah?” He said, “No, but I give you my word that I will not fight you and I will not join anyone who is fighting you.” So the Messenger of Allah let him on his way. The polytheist returned to his people and said, “I have just come to you from the best of people!”

Hadith on Mercy: The Angel of the Mountains offered to destroy the disbelievers but the Prophet had mercy on them

Aisha reported: She asked the Prophet , “Have you encountered a day harder than the battle of Uhud?” The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied, “Your tribes have troubled very much, and the worst was the day of ‘Aqaba when I presented myself to Ibn Abd-Yalail ibn Abd-Kulal and he did not respond to what I intended. So I departed, overwhelmed with excessive sorrow, and I could not relax until I found myself at Qarnath-Tha-alib where I lifted my head towards the sky to see a cloud shading me. I looked up and saw Gabriel in it. He called me saying, “Allah has heard your people’s saying to you and how they have replied. Allah has sent the Angel of the Mountains to you that you may order him to do whatever you wish to these people.” The Angel of the Mountains greeted me, and said, “O Muhammad, order what you wish. If you like, I will let the mountains fall on them.” The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “No, I hope that Allah will bring from their descendants people who will worship Allah alone without associating partners with Him.”

Hadith Khutbah Al-Hājah: How the Prophet would begin his sermons, and the conversion of the people of Dimād to Islam

Ibn Abbas reported: Dimad came to Mecca and he belonged to the tribe of Azd Shanu’a, and he used to protect the person who was under the influence of charms. He heard the foolish people of Mecca say that Muhammad was under the spell. Upon this he said, “If I were to come across this man, Allah might cure him at my hand.” He met him and said, “Muhammad, I can protect someone who is under the influence of charms, and Allah cures one whom He so desires at my hand. Do you want this?” Upon this the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “All praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, ask His help; and he whom Allah guides aright there is none to lead him astray, and he who is led astray there is none to guide him, and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He is One having no partner with Him, and that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger. To proceed…” Now after this Dimad said: “Repeat these words of yours before me,” and the Messenger of Allah repeated these to him three times. And he said, “I have heard the words of soothsayers, magicians, and poets, but I have never heard such words as yours, and they reach the depth (of eloquence). Bring forth your hand so I can take an oath of loyalty to you and Islam.” So he took an oath of allegiance to him. The Messenger of Allah said, “And on behalf of your people.” He said, “On behalf of my people.” The Messenger of Allah sent an expedition that passed by his people. The leader of the expedition said to the army, “Did you find anything from these people?” One of them said, “I found a basin for water.” So the leader said, “Return it, for indeed these are the people of Dimad.”

Al-Qurtubi said concerning the verse, “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just,” (5:8) that this means “the disbelief of the disbeliever does not prevent him from enjoying justice.”

[Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Verse 5:8]

Hadith on War: The Prophet fought the Quraish until they stopped persecuting Muslims

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “I have been commanded to fight the idolaters until they witness that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His servant and His messenger. If they witness that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger, pray our prayer, face our direction of prayer, and eat from our slaughtered animals, then their lives and their wealth are forbidden for us to take except by right of justice.”
[Sunan An-Nasa’i, Book of Unlawfulness of Bloodshed, Number 3966, Sahih]
Ibn Taymiyyah said, “The meaning of this tradition is to fight those who are waging war whom Allah has called us to fight, and it does not mean to fight those who have made peace whom Allah has commanded us to fulfill their peace.”

Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “Allah the Exalted said: The son of Adam has lied against Me but he has no right to do so, and he has abused Me but he has no right to do so. As for his lie, it is his saying that I cannot recreate him as I did before; and as for his abuse, it is his saying that I have a son, but glorified am I above taking a wife or a son.”

Hadith on Monotheism: Whoever puts his faith in Astrology has disbelieved in Allah

Zaid ibn Khalid Al-Juhani reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, led the morning prayer at Hudaibiya while there were marks of rainfall during the night. After prayer he turned toward the people and asked, “Do you know what your Lord has said?” They replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Allah said: Some of my servants entered the morning as believers in Me and some as disbelievers. He who said: we have been given rain due to the blessing and mercy of Allah, he is a believer in Me and a disbeliever in the power of the stars; and he who said: we have been given rain due to the rising of such-and-such star, he has disbelieved in me and has put his faith in the stars.”
