Hadith on Love: Love for people what you love for yourself and you will be a Muslim

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Who will these words and act upon them or teach someone to act upon them?” I said, “I will, O Messenger of Allah.” So he taught me five sayings, “Beware of what is unlawful and you will be the best worshipper among the people; be satisfied with what Allah has given you and you will be the richest of the people; be kind to your neighbor and you will be a believer; love for the people what you love for yourself and you will be a Muslim; and do not laugh too often, for indeed, too much laughter will deaden the heart.

Hadith on Punishment: How can we be sure the clouds are bringing rain and not thunder?

Aisha, the wife of the Prophet, reported: I never saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, laughing so loudly that we could see the back of his throat, but rather he used only to smile. Whenever he saw clouds or winds, one could recognize it on his face. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, when people see clouds they usually rejoice, hoping that it will bring rain; but I see that when you see clouds, one could recognize dissatisfaction on your face.” He said, “O Aisha, how can we believe there is no punishment in it? Some people were punished with the wind, while the people saw the punishment but they said: this is bringing rain.”

Hadith on Law: Do not neglect duties, transgress limits, or disrespect Allah’s silence

Abu Tha’laba Al-Khushani reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Indeed, Allah has made duties obligatory, so do not neglect them; and He has set limits, so do not transgress them; and He has remained silent concerning things as mercy for you, not out of forgetfulness, so do not search them out.

Hadith on Pardon: The Messenger of Allah forgives the polytheist who tried to murder him

Jabir reported: We took part in the expedition with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, against Najd and when the time for afternoon rest approached, he was in a valley of thorny trees. He dismounted under a tree to rest in its shade and hung his sword upon it. The people dispersed among the trees in order to use their shade. While we were like this, the Messenger of Allah called us and we came to find a Bedouin sitting in front of him. The Messenger of Allah said, “This person came to me while I was asleep and he quietly took my sword. I woke up while he was standing over my head, holding my unsheathed sword. He said: Who will protect you from me? I said: Allah, three times.” And the Messenger of Allah did not punish him.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 59, Number 460]

In another narration, the polytheist said, “Who will protect you from me?” The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Allah the Exalted.” Then the sword fell from his hand and the Messenger of Allah seized it. He said, “Who will protect you from me?” The polytheist said, “Be good to me!” He said, “Will you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I am the Messenger of Allah?” He said, “No, but I give you my word that I will not fight you and I will not join anyone who is fighting you.” So the Messenger of Allah let him on his way. The polytheist returned to his people and said, “I have just come to you from the best of people!”

Ibn Al-Qayyim: Good manners is to behave in a beautiful way with creation

Ibn Taymiyyah: The believers reconcile people, give charity, and behave with good character

Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728AH/1328CE) wrote in his text book on Islamic Creed, “The believers encourage people to reconcile relations with those who have cut them off, to give charity to those who have deprived them, and to forgive those who have oppressed them. They order people to keep benevolence with parents, to uphold ties of family, to be benevolent with neighbors, to be kind with orphans, travelers and the poor, and to be gentle with servants. They forbid bragging, arrogance and transgression. They discourage people from feeling superior over others, rightly or wrongly. And they bid people use lofty manners and prohibit them from pursuing trifles. All that they say or do from the above (good character) or from other teachings, in all of it they follow the Book and the Sunnah. Their path is the religion of Islam, for which Allah sent Muhammad, peace be blessings be upon him.”

العقيدة الواسطية

Ibn Taymiyyah: Enjoining good and forbidding evil requires knowledge, mercy, and wisdom

Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728AH/1328CE) said, “Three qualities are essential for enjoining good: knowledge, gentleness, and patience. Knowledge is required before enjoining and forbidding, gentleness is required during it, and patience is required after it. This separation does not negate the fact that these three qualities should be present at all times. This is similar to a statement narrated from the righteous predecessors, some of whom attributed it to the Prophet. Abu Ya’la mentioned this in his book entitled Al-Ma’tamad as follows: No one should enjoin good or forbid evil unless he understands what he enjoins, understands what he forbids, show gentleness in what he enjoins, shows gentleness in what he forbids, show forbearance in what he enjoins, and show forbearance in what he forbids.”

[Ibn Taymiyyah, Amr bil-Ma’ruf wa Nahi ‘an al-Munkar]

Ibn Rajab: Those who love Allah are compassionate with sinners and wish them well

Ibn Rajab (d. 795H/1392CE) reported: Some of the righteous predecessors said, “The people who love Allah look by the light of Allah, and they are compassionate with those who disobey Allah. They hate their actions but show mercy to them so that through their admonitions they might leave their actions. They are afraid that the Hellfire will consume their bodies. The believer will not truly be a believer until he is pleased for people to have what he is pleased for himself. If he sees in someone else some merit by which they excel him, then he wishes the like of it for himself. If that merit is related to the religion then it is good.”

[Ibn Rajab, Jami’ Ulum wal-Hikam]

Hadith on Knowledge: The Superiority of the Scholar over the Worshipper, Blessings upon those who teach Good

Abu Umama Al-Bahili reported: Two men were mentioned before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, one of them a worshipper, the other a scholar. So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “The superiority of the scholar over the worshipper is like my superiority over the least of you.” Then he said, “Indeed, Allah, His angels, and the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth – even the ant in his hole, even the fish – send blessings upon the one who teaches people to do good.”
Al-Fudayl ibn Iyad would say, “A scholar who works in teaching has a high status in the domains of the heavens.”
