Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “O Allah, benefit me with what you have taught me and teach me what will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge. All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance and I seek refuge in Allah from the circumstances of the people of the Hellfire.”

Hadith on the Hour: Among signs of the Hour are ignorance, adultery, and an increase of women

Anas ibn Malik reported: I will narrate traditions which no one after me can narrate. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say, “Among the signs of the Hour are that knowledge will decrease, ignorance will prevail, adultery will become widespread, and women will increase and men will decrease until a single man must care for fifty women.”

Hadith on Abraham: The story of Zaid ibn Amr’s search for the true religion of Abraham

Ibn Umar reported: Zaid ibn Amr ibn Nufail went to Syria to ask about a ture religion to follow. He met a Jewish scholar and he asked them about their religion. Zaid said, “I intend to embrace your religion, so tell me something about it.” The Jew said, “You cannot embrace our religion until you receive a share of Allah’s anger.” Zaid said, “I do not run except from Allah’s anger and I will never bear it if I can avoid it; can you tell me about another religion?” He said, “I do not know of any other religion but the Haneef.” Zaid said, “What is the Haneef?” He said, “Haneef is the religion of Abraham who was neither a Jew nor a Christian.” Then Zaid left and he met a Christian scholar and he told him the same as before. The Christian said, “You cannot embrace our religion until you receive a share of Allah’s curse.” Zaid said, “I do not run except from Allah’s curse and I will never bear it if I can avoid it; can you tell me about another religion?” He said, “I do not know of any other religion but the Haneef.” Zaid said, “What is the Haneef?” He said, “Haneef is the religion of Abraham, who was neither a Jew nor a Christian, and he would worship none but Allah.” When Zaid heard this about Abraham, he left that place and he raised both of his hands and he said, “O Allah, you are my witness that I am upon the religion of Abraham.”

Ahmad ibn Hanbal: Weak narrations are more beloved to me than my personal opinion

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “A narration with a weak chain is more beloved to us than our opinion.”

قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ  ضَعِيفُ الْحَدِيثِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْنَا مِنَ الرَّأْيِ

Ibn Taymiyyah: Permission to relate weak narrations only as supporting evidence for established good manners

Ibn Taymiyyah said, “It is not permissible to establish something in the Sharia based upon a weak narration which is not authentic or good, but Ahmad bin Hanbal and other scholars considered it permissible to narrate regarding virtuous deeds which are not known to be affirmed but when it is known not to be a lie. That is because when the action is known to be legislated with authentic evidence and it is not known to be a false narration, then it is possible that the reward is true, but not one of the Imams said that he considered it to be permissible to make something obligatory or recommended based upon a weak narration.”

[Majmu Al-Fatawa 250/1]

Hadith on Law: Do not neglect duties, transgress limits, or disrespect Allah’s silence

Abu Tha’laba Al-Khushani reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Indeed, Allah has made duties obligatory, so do not neglect them; and He has set limits, so do not transgress them; and He has remained silent concerning things as mercy for you, not out of forgetfulness, so do not search them out.

Hadith of Supplication: Whoever says this, Allāh will replace his affliction with happiness

Abdullāh narrated: The Messenger of Allāh, peace be upon him, said, “If any Muslim is afflicted with distress and makes this supplication, then his supplication will be answered: O Allāh, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command concerning me prevails, and Your decision concerning me is just. I call upon You by every one of the beautiful names with which You have described Yourself, or which You have revealed in Your Book, or have taught anyone of Your creatures, or which You have chosen to keep in the Knowledge off the Unseen with You, to make the Qurān the delight of my heart, the light of my chest, and remove any grief, sorrows, and afflictions.” He said, “[If he says this] Allāh will remove one’s affliction and replace it with joy and happiness.” They said, “O Messenger of Allāh, should we not learn it?” He said, “Yes, whoever hears it should know it.

Ibn Taymiyyah: Enjoining good and forbidding evil requires knowledge, mercy, and wisdom

Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728AH/1328CE) said, “Three qualities are essential for enjoining good: knowledge, gentleness, and patience. Knowledge is required before enjoining and forbidding, gentleness is required during it, and patience is required after it. This separation does not negate the fact that these three qualities should be present at all times. This is similar to a statement narrated from the righteous predecessors, some of whom attributed it to the Prophet. Abu Ya’la mentioned this in his book entitled Al-Ma’tamad as follows: No one should enjoin good or forbid evil unless he understands what he enjoins, understands what he forbids, show gentleness in what he enjoins, shows gentleness in what he forbids, show forbearance in what he enjoins, and show forbearance in what he forbids.”

[Ibn Taymiyyah, Amr bil-Ma’ruf wa Nahi ‘an al-Munkar]

Hadith on Knowledge: The Superiority of the Scholar over the Worshipper, Blessings upon those who teach Good

Abu Umama Al-Bahili reported: Two men were mentioned before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, one of them a worshipper, the other a scholar. So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “The superiority of the scholar over the worshipper is like my superiority over the least of you.” Then he said, “Indeed, Allah, His angels, and the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth – even the ant in his hole, even the fish – send blessings upon the one who teaches people to do good.”
Al-Fudayl ibn Iyad would say, “A scholar who works in teaching has a high status in the domains of the heavens.”

Hadith on Quran: The reason the Bismillah is missing from Surah At-Tawba is because Uthman thought it could be part of Surah Al-Anfal

Ibn Abbas said: I said to Uthman ibn Affan, “What is your reasoning with Surah Al-Anfal, which has less than a hundred verses, and Surah Bara’ah (At-Tawba), which has more than a hundred verses, yet you put them together without writing in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful between them and you placed them with the seven long Surahs. Why did you do that?” Uthman said, “A long time might pass with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, without anything being revealed to him, and then sometimes a Surah with numerous verses might be revealed. So when something was revealed he would call for someone who could write and tell them to put these verses in the Surah which mentions this and that. When a verse was revealed, he would tell them to put this verse in the Surah which mentions this and that. Al-Anfal was among the first to be revealed in Medina, and Bara’ah was among the last of those revealed of the Quran and their discussions resemble each other, so we thought that they were part of each other. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, died and it was not clear to us if they were part of each other. For this reason, we put them together without writing in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful and we included them with the seven long Surahs.”
